One Tree Planted

One Tree Planted is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit that is on a mission to make it simple for anyone to help the environment by planting trees.

Their projects span the globe and are done in partnership with local communities and environmental organisations to create an impact for nature, people, and wildlife.

Reforestation helps to restore forests that have been degraded or deforested, provide jobs for social impact, and restore biodiversity habitat. Many projects have overlapping objectives that contribute to the UN's Sustainable Development Goals. These objectives support the growth of healthy forests and the development of urban forestry initiatives.

Tree planting has received a bad name, but One Tree Planting have the most stringent monitoring and vetting processes that ensure the success and survival rate of their tree projects are as high as possible.

One Tree Planted works with local planting partners in more than forty countries, in diverse

ecosystems. Some of their partners plant a few thousand trees per year, and some over a million trees per year. Their  monitoring strategy relies on five pillars that enable them to adjust to the many scales and geographies where we work and ensure trust is built between all partners.

Project proposal and vetting

The first, most significant pillar is project vetting. One Tree Planted works with partners that have a track record of successful planting projects. They require a monitoring and maintenance plan that they review prior to any project approval. They gather geographic site data, and their project managers have a personal relationship with every single one of their planting partners.

Partner reporting and GPS verified photos

One Tree Planted requires reporting on all planting projects along with regular updates through the third year to track tree survival and other metrics of success, along with photos that include GPS coordinates.

Drone and satellite imagery monitoring

They collect drone data on site visits and are empowering planting partners to collect their own drone data for high-resolution monitoring for select projects. One Tree Planted uses a combination of commercial and public satellite imagery sources to monitor tree canopy cover and is developing ways to scale this program.

Emergent technology trials

The technology to enable tree monitoring is changing rapidly. Every year there are new satellites, drones, and monitoring applications that improve their ability to monitor remotely. One Tree Planted is in active conversation with leaders in this space and is up-to-date on the latest technology. They are continuously engaging in on-the-ground trials with diverse technology.

Site visits

For their "Keystone Partners" planting a significant number of trees, One Tree Planted sends their staff and forestry specialists for in-person technical visits to assess site performance and monitoring protocol implementation. During these site visits, their team gets a full view of the landscape, nurseries, seedlings, and in-progress operations, which are all documented.
